Low Alwinton Cottages are situated near the small picturesque village of Alwinton, nestling at the foot of the Cheviot Hills in the Northumberland National Park. Northumberland is a region of contrasts, with the Cheviot Hills inland and miles upon miles of sandy beaches and rocky headlands running along the fabulous unspoiled coastline.
Northumberland is a region of great antiquity and boasts remains of ancient occupation dating back to the stone age. In the Simonside Hills (overlooking nearby Rothbury) there are examples of ancient and prehistoric rock art known as 'Cup and Ring' marks.
The Romans have also left there mark in the area. Most famously at the World Heritage site of Hadrian's Wall. However there are a multitude of less well know sites such as Chew Green, which is located a little furthur up the Coquet Valley.
Northumberland is also home to more castles and fortified positions than any other region in England. This includes Alnwick Castle which was recently made famous as the location for the Haary Potter movies. There is also the imposing Bamburgh Castle aswell as Walkworth and Dunstanburgh Castles.
Such an unspoiled landscape provides a haven for wildlife. Black Grouse can be heard over the hills in early Spring, and even the rare Osprey is a known summer visitor. Otters are commonly found along the banks of the River Coquet, a glimpse of any one of these elusive creatures can stay with you for a lifetime.
If all of the peace and quiet gets too much, you are only a short drive away from the thriving market towns of Alwnwick and Morpeth. For those who enjoy shopping, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne offers fantastic shops and a world famous nightlife.
